Jewish cult buildings and places of power in Barysaw

The Great Synagogue. 49 III Internatsionala st. Built at the beginning of the 20th century from bricks. During the Soviet era, the House of Pioneers and Schoolchildren was located here. In 1962, a reconstruction was carried out, as a result of which the facades were completely changed, including the destruction of the original decorative elements.

Coordinates: 54.243606, 28.505035.

The Hewre Tylim Synagogue. 41 Lapatsina st. Built in 1911 on the site of an old synagogue, and in 1670, a Jewish school existed on approximately the same site. At the new synagogue, there was a Talmud-Torah Jewish school.

In 1994, with the official permission of the Barysaw Town Executive Committee, the “Sviatlo Menory” (“Menorah Light”) Educational Society installed a protective sign on the building with the inscription: “Ministry of Culture of Belarus. Hewre Tylim Synagogue. Built in 1911. Monument of architecture. Protected by the state”; however, as of 2022, the building was not included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus. More info here

The Talmud Torah Jewish school. 39 Lapatsina st. Building of the early 20th century. The architectural ensemble, represented by the Hewre Tylim Synagogue and the Talmud Torah school, may have had a closed courtyard and a fence. It is possible that the synagogue and the school were built at the same time. The facades of the buildings are almost identical: decorated with stucco ornamentation of the Mohammedan pattern mixed with classical Greco-Roman forms. The influence of national local traditions is felt in the architecture.

The school building is approximately three times larger than the synagogue in terms of area, and is T-shaped in plan. The time when Talmud Torah was closed is unknown. All further surrounding buildings were erected, most likely, in the post-war period. In the 70s, there was a city library in the building of the former Jewish school. An excerpt from the reference “Jewish school in Barysaw: Brief historical information” is available at

Jewish cemetery. Between Zaslonava, 1 Maya, Novaya and Vitebskaya streets. The cemetery was founded in 1931. To the left of the entrance, in the pre-war years, only women were buried, and to the right, men. In the post-war period, this order was no longer followed. n 1973, the town’s executive committee closed the cemetery for burials. In 2006, the community received a permit for burials in the graves of relatives in agreement with the executive committee. There are more than 700 burials in the cemetery. The famous Jewish poet Hirsh Kamyanetski, who died in 1957 at the age of 62, is buried here. Next to him, within the same fence, lies his wife. There is an inscription in Yiddish on the monument.

Three pogroms were committed at this cemetery in the last twenty years: in 1998, 2004 and 2008. As a result, 66 monuments were toppled and broken. 62 of them have not been restored. Read more about the history and current state of the cemetery here and here.

Jewish cemetery. On the northern edge of the town, Marozava, Puhachova and Zarechnaya streets. The cemetery was founded in the middle of the 19th century. There are more than 2,500 burials on a total area of 4.5 hectares. At the beginning of the cemetery there is a monument to the victims of Stalin’s repressions, on which the names and surnames of Barysaw Jews are engraved. The monument was erected on the initiative of Alexander Rosenblum, a local historian, one of the organizers of the modern Jewish community of Barysaw, now a resident of Israel.

In 1972, the well-known Minsk rabbi Yeruham Yehuda Leib Perelman (1833-1896), his wife Leia and daughter Feiga together with her husband, Rabbi Eliezer Rabinovich, were reburied at this cemetery. The reburial was caused by the final liquidation of the Jewish cemetery in Minsk near the Dinamo stadium. Read more here and here.
