Expedition diary: July 11, 2021
Mazel tov, we have started!
On a hot July day, the Belarusian part of the Shtetlfest team gathered in Barysaw to get acquainted with each other and with Jewish history of the town that turned out to be the first point of the route.
First, we looked at the buildings of two former Barysaw synagogues in the Old Town.
Then we visited the Barysaw United Museum of Local Lore. There are few exhibits on our topic, but they are there, and the employee tells quite interesting stories about pre-revolutionary and interwar Barysaw.
After visiting the museum, we went to the manor house that belonged to the landowner Kaladzeyev about a hundred years ago. This is perhaps the only exhibition in Barysaw devoted to the Jewish history of the town. There are several exhibits from the museum’s holdings, as well as personal belongings and documents of residents.
In the evening, we went to have dinner and sleep in the Bivak manor (you can read more about this place in the section For Tourists). By the way, any drink was more invigorating and tastier for the tired ones when served in the Shtetlfest signature cup.
